Season 2 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was released on Netflix last April 5, 2019. To protect her mortal friends from herself, the protagonist Sabrina Spellman decided to go to the Academy of Unseen Arts full-time and leave Baxter High. Season 2 dwelled more on Sabrina’s life as a witch after signing the Book of the Beast. Sabrina is still the stubborn witch that we knew who aims to fight unfair traditions of the Church of Night. I recently just watched the second season and couldn’t help but share my thoughts on this show. Here are 5 things that I Love About Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2. Warning, though, some spoilers ahead!
1. Kiernan Shipka’s Performance
Kiernan Shipka who plays the titular role of Sabrina Spellman is just perfect for the role. She has the face with both innocence and bad-assery which is just what the role needs. She’s a damn good actress as well. I can just see the frustration, the determination or whatever emotion that is in Shipka’s eyes in every scene. There were several key moments in the show that wouldn’t have been pulled off if the actress is not right for the show. Example *spoilers ahead*, when Sabrina died and came back to life and said “Arise”, I felt chills in my bones looking at Sabrina.
2. The Show Didn’t Shy Away from Important Issues
I also loved how the show didn’t shy away from important social issues like gender equality. Father Blackwood is like the representation of the privileged white guy who thinks everybody else are inferior to him. Sabrina, on the other hand, fought Blackwood’s traditional views and tried her best to push for gender equality or just equality in general.
Another thing that the show portrayed is what a transgender really is. The character we knew as Susie has always felt like she’s not really a she but a he. He finally embraced this and changed his name to Theo. The series showed how hard it can be like how judgmental other people can be. Theo tried to use the male’s locker room but was ridiculed by bullies. The series also showed Theo coming out to his dad, a scene that is very important to me. The only problem for me is the fact that in reality, people are not as welcoming and open as the Theo’s friends and family in the series. However, I still like this overall since I think it might bring hope to others.
3. Lilith aka Miss Wardwell
I loved how the show explored the character of Lilith. I love how the history of Lilith and Lucifer’s relationship was showed. The character of Lilith is such a complex character and I couldn’t help but root for her. I guess that her character represents victims of domestic abuse as well. When Sabrina asked Lilith why she’s following whatever the Dark Lord commands even if he was cruel and she answered that it’s all she’s ever known, I felt so sad for the character.
So… that’s it! That’s 3 things I love about the second season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I just watched the second season and already couldn’t wait for the next one. Sabrina’s “mission” for the next season is really interesting and I really really hope she succeeds.
